goal 5: ACHIEVE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER ALL WOMEN AND GIRLS
TEACHING GLOBAL GOAL 5: GENDER EQUALITY
Nineteen year old Sonita Alizadeh is raising her voice to end child marriage. With a poet’s soul and activist’s passion, she uses rap, conviction and courage to stand up for girls’ rights and share her powerful story with the world. Born in Afghanistan, Sonita’s family fled to Iran to escape the Taliban when she was a child, and she grew up as an undocumented refugee in Tehran. While there, she saw her friends disappear from the classroom one-by-one, as they were forced to marry. During this time, a documentary filmmaker learned about Sonita and took an interest in her difficult circumstances. For three years she followed Sonita, capturing both her striving and her struggles, including when Sonita’s family decided to sell her. However, Sonita had other ideas for her life. In response to her impending marriage and the feelings of so many of her friends, Sonita wrote the song “Daughters for Sale” and recorded a music video with the help of the filmmaker. They posted it, and it quickly went viral. Since then, Sonita has moved to the US to pursue her education, has an award winning documentary titled Sonita, and is a “rap-tivist”, using her songs to build an international youth movement to mobilize youth voices to call for an end to child marriage in countries all around the world.

Gender Equality: Now
Gender inequality doesn’t make sense on any level. Promoting gender equality can reduce extreme poverty and hunger and boost shared prosperity for girls and boys, women and men, around the world.
Gender equality: the power of change
Sexual and reproductive health and rights are fundamental human rights. Having access to those rights will bring about huge changes to the lives of women and girls around the world. Only when women and girls have those rights will we have gender equality and only then will we be able to tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems. In this animation we have used the stories of two girls to illustrate what happens when you give women and girls the power to decide for themselves and the ability to be in control of their own bodies. It can make all the difference to individual lives as well as to the lives of families and the communities they live in.

UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 aims to provide women and girls with equal access to education, health care, decent work, and representation in political and economic decision-making processes will fuel sustainable economies and benefit societies and humanity at large.
